Striking a High Note Since 1975!
Join the Fun!
Wolverton was the world’s first railway town and Wolverton Gilbert and Sullivan Society drew many of its first members from the men and women employed in the giant railway works established by the London & Birmingham Railway in 1838.
By the 21st century the society covered not just that busy town but the whole of Milton Keynes and surrounding area.
First Steps
In the summer of 1974 Fred Cornford, a Wolverton Urban District Councillor, was cycling along Church Street in the famous railway town minding his own business when a car drew up alongside him. The occupant was Arnold Jones. Arnold was, among other musical endeavours, the conductor of the Wolverton Orchestral Society. He wound down his window and told Fred he was thinking of forming a Gilbert and Sullivan Society and would Fred chair the first meeting?
1975 HMS Pinafore
In May 1975, the newly formed Wolverton and District Gilbert and Sullivan Society performed HMS Pinafore. In the programme, the chairman expressed the hope that the audience would find it a pleasant and entertaining occasion.
It seems they did, because we are still at it!
FUN FACT: One of the vice-presidents of the new society was a certain John Dankworth.
the present day
Wolverton G&S Society is a thriving and successful amateur music group. We perform the works of G&S as well as other good musicals and we bring people together with songs and smiles.
It’s like magic, but the secret is just good friends and great music!

Friends and patrons
Musical theatre performed to this high standard takes more than talent. It’s expensive!
We’re all amateurs who pay to perform, but we rely on the generosity of Friends and Patrons to keep our ticket prices down and our membership accessible.
