Gift Aid
Gift Aid
Gift Aid is a UK government scheme which allows charities like us to reclaim some of the tax you pay on your income.
How much tax do I need to have paid?
Say you decide in a fit of generosity, and to make this example simpler, to donate £200. If you complete a Gift Aid declaration, we would claim £50 in Gift Aid.
If you haven’t paid at least £50 in income or capital gains tax, but you still complete a Gift Aid declaration, HMRC will charge you for the £50.
Most of us, of course, pay rather more than £50 in taxes…
Subs count as donations
Our membership subscriptions are considered to be donations as well as any extra money people decide to donate.
Claiming for past subs and donations
The society can claim for subscriptions and donations made up to four years ago.
Future claims
You don’t have to complete a declaration every year. You can agree to let the society claim on future subs and donations.
Cancellation
If you don’t pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid, HMRC will charge you for it. If you stop paying enough tax in the UK to qualify for gift aid, you can use the form to cancel your declaration.
Here’s the Gift Aid form.
