Bert Coleman

Bert Coleman was a founder member of the Wolverton Gilbert and Sullivan Society in 1974. In addition to being a very fine bass singer he was the society business manager for the vital early years. He is pictured here as Antonio in our 1989 production of The Gondoliers, a part he originally performed in our first production in 1980.

Bert served as chairman for the society after Fred Cornford but it was his role as treasurer that lasted longest aside from his enthusiastic support of our society in a variety of roles and chorus parts. Bert had a keen sense of humour. One of his party pieces was “English Country Gardener”, a song that owed more to “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” than it did to “Gardeners’ World”!

Here is another image of Bert, performing one of his favourite roles – Antonio in the Gondoliers. This was 1989, the year of the great portable TV prank…..
