Clarence Gill
Yes. That really is Clarence as Pirate King in 1984. Naturally, he was a founding member of our society and an exceptional recruiter. Ask nearly anyone who joined in the first 30 years how they heard about us, and you’ll get the same answer: ‘Clarence invited me’.

Clarence was in our very first show and appeared in thirteen of our G&S productions as well as our other shows. Clarence was a great help backstage too with makeup and ideas. He was president of our society for many years.
Here is a recording of Clarence singing Rose of England.

Clarence passed away in 2020 and, although Covid measures meant we couldn’t go to the funeral, we lined his cortege route and sang one of his favourite G&S songs, “For He is an Englishman”!

Clarence is publicly portrayed in this wonderful mural by Timothy B Layden and Luke McDonnell. You can see it outside the Old Bath House by Tescos in Wolverton, the town he loved and entertained for so many years.
